Isla Mujeres, Mexico — The municipal government of Isla Mujeres, led by Mayor Atenea Gómez Ricalde, has delivered an economic support payment of 250,000 pesos to the "Patria y Progreso" Fishing Cooperative. The disbursement is part of a new social program called the Support Program for the Improvement of Infrastructure for Fishing Cooperatives, funded entirely by municipal resources.
Commitment to the Fishing Community
Mayor Atenea Gómez underscored the administration's commitment to the local fishing industry. "Today we continue to fulfill our promises to our fisherman friends, delivering direct support to strengthen their work and improve their infrastructure," she stated. "With this program, we back our fishing cooperatives because we know their effort is part of the history and the heart of our island."
According to an official communiqué, this action reaffirms the municipal government's commitment to the fishermen and women of Isla Mujeres. The statement noted that the future of Isla Mujeres also depends on strengthening those who work at sea, as they are a fundamental part of the local economy and the municipality's identity.
Program Details and Objectives
The "Patria y Progreso" Cooperative, which is comprised of more than 120 active fishermen, became the second fishing organization to receive this benefit. The program's goal for 2025 is to provide support to a total of five cooperatives.
The mayor detailed that the new social program aims to strengthen the productive capacity and improve the working conditions of fishermen and women. She added that the support funds can be allocated to infrastructure such as docks, warehouses, cold storage rooms, sanitary management areas, workshops, or water and drainage systems. The funds may also be used for productive equipment, including ice machines, refrigeration systems, solar panels, stainless steel furniture, and scales.
Furthermore, she indicated that strengthening the fishing cooperatives also provides a boost to tourism and the local economy by enabling the offer of better products and services for both residents and visitors.
