Cozumel Crocodile Killed in Road Accident

COZUMEL, QRoo — An Acutus crocodile was killed after being struck by a vehicle on the entrance to Cozumel's eastern coast at kilometer 12. The incident occurred around 6:00 hours and was reported to local authorities by a citizen.

Rafael Chacón Méndez, a biologist with the Cozumel Parks and Museums Foundation, arrived at the site and confirmed the animal showed no vital signs. After examining the body, he determined the cause of death was a direct blow to the head, which caused a fatal fracture.

The specialist lamented that this type of incident has become increasingly frequent on the island and noted that not only crocodiles, but also species such as raccoons and coatis, face constant risks due to driver recklessness.

Chacón Méndez called for greater caution when driving in Cozumel's natural areas and highways in order to protect the flora and fauna that form part of the island's environmental heritage.

The appeal seeks to raise awareness among residents and visitors about the importance of reducing speed and being alert to the presence of wild animals, whose conservation is key to the ecological balance of the region.
