Mayor Atenea Gómez Ricalde at the inauguration of the diabetes center in Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres — Fulfilling a new commitment to island families, municipal president Atenea Gómez Ricalde inaugurated the first Center for the Prevention and Care of Diabetes, a historic achievement in Isla Mujeres, as it is the first center of its kind in the municipality.

This center was designed to provide specialized care to island families affected by this condition, offering comprehensive prevention, diagnosis, and treatment services in one location.

During the inauguration, the island mayor highlighted the relevance of this project as a historic step for the municipality.

“In this space, we will provide close and humane care to those who need it most, without them having to travel outside the island,” stated the island mayor.

Atenea Gómez reiterated that this space will allow families to prevent, control, and treat diabetes effectively, with highly trained staff.

The center features specialized medical offices, care by internists and nurses expert in diabetes, as well as services for diabetic foot care and management of hard-to-heal wounds. Oxygen therapies and hyperbaric chamber services were also included for comprehensive patient follow-up.

The municipal president reported that the building is located next to the Municipal Comprehensive Rehabilitation Center (CRIM) Isla Mujeres, integrating into the municipal medical area to strengthen the local care network and complement the services provided by state and federal levels.

“We want our families to receive quality care without having to leave Isla Mujeres, and also to be able to access specific medications at low cost for diabetes treatment,” explained Atenea Gómez Ricalde.

This project was carried out as part of the 2024 Annual Investment Program and funded with the Participatory Budget.

With the opening of this center, Isla Mujeres advances in creating specialized care spaces against diabetes, consolidating a close, participatory, and humane management model.
