Tulum, Quintana Roo — A grocery store constructed with a palapa roof was completely destroyed in a fire early Sunday morning in Tulum’s Region 15. The blaze, which resulted in no injuries, occurred at the intersection of 21 Poniente and 8 Sur streets.

Tulum firefighters arrived at the scene shortly after 2:30 a.m. and worked to extinguish the flames, preventing the fire from spreading to nearby jungle areas. The structure, made of wood and palm, was quickly consumed by the fire.

During the operation, firefighters discovered a gas cylinder damaged by heat among the debris, along with completely charred refrigerators and furniture. The Directorate of Civil Protection stated that the cause of the fire remains under investigation. Potential factors being considered include electrical failures or negligence in handling flammable materials.

The area was cordoned off to allow for the necessary forensic procedures. Local residents have called for increased inspections of businesses with combustible structures, citing the risks they pose in areas adjacent to the jungle.
