Playa del Carmen, Q. Roo. – Nearly three years after the crime that shocked the Argentine and Mexican communities, the case of Agostina Jalabert takes a decisive turn toward international justice. The National Citizen Observatory on Femicide (OCNF) reported that Interpol has activated a red notice to locate and capture Juan Manuel “N”, the alleged perpetrator of the femicide that occurred on February 18, 2023, in Playa del Carmen.

The international arrest warrant, issued by Mexican judicial authorities, has already had an impact in Argentina. On January 6, federal judge of guarantees in Viedma, Ezequiel Humberto Andreani, formally ordered the detention of the accused for extradition purposes.

From “Suicide” to Femicide: The Family’s Long Journey

The Jalabert case has become an emblem of the fight against impunity and institutional negligence. Initially, the Quintana Roo State Attorney General’s Office classified the young woman’s death as a suicide, ignoring the physical evidence found by police at the crime scene.

“This case is emblematic due to the anomalies committed from the beginning. The Attorney General’s Office had to reclassify the crime due to the insistence of the family and civil organizations,” stated the OCNF.

After a hard-fought legal battle and the support of feminist groups in both countries, the Public Prosecutor’s Office concluded the investigation, confirming it was a murder motivated by gender.

The Search for an International Fugitive

Juan Manuel “N”, an Argentine national, is identified by Interpol as a “fugitive wanted for a criminal proceeding.” In Mexico, if found guilty, he could face a maximum penalty of 40 years in prison, according to the Quintana Roo Penal Code.

Currently, search efforts are focused on:

  • Viedma, Argentina: Locality where he has been recently seen.
  • Mexico, Guatemala, and the United States: Countries where active alerts are maintained.

A Call for Cross-Border Cooperation

The OCNF has urged police corporations and justice administration bodies to collaborate closely with Interpol. The goal is for the alleged femicide perpetrator to be detained and promptly presented before Mexican courts for formal charges.

“There is hope that, after years of omissions, justice will finally be served for Agostina,” concluded the organization.
