Cancún, Quintana Roo — Firefighters rescued an injured eagle found on a central median along Costa Maya Avenue in Cancún on Monday afternoon, authorities announced.
The bird was discovered around 2 p.m. near the intersection of Costa Maya Avenue and 20 de Noviembre Avenue, between regions 227 and 234. Residents spotted the eagle lying on the median, apparently hurt, and alerted emergency services.
Cancún firefighters responded promptly, carefully covering the bird with a uniform jacket to prevent it from becoming agitated or attempting to escape. They secured the eagle without causing further harm.
After the rescue, firefighters said they would transport the eagle to their central station for processing before handing it over to the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa), the agency responsible for wildlife cases.
Witnesses noted that eagles are uncommon in the urban area, where smaller birds like sparrows or parrots are typically seen. The eagle’s presence on a busy avenue surprised onlookers.
The exact species of eagle and the severity of its injuries remain unknown. Specialized personnel will evaluate its health to determine if it can be rehabilitated and released back into its natural habitat.
