Cancún, Mexico — The National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) in Quintana Roo has issued an open call for anthropologists, archaeologists, historians, and other social scientists focused on the Mexican Caribbean and the country’s southern border to submit articles and research for publication in its new journal, Ecos de la Costa Oriental.

Margarito Molina Rendón, director of INAH Quintana Roo, explained that the publication aims to disseminate knowledge about the easternmost region of Mexico, home to some of the oldest settlements of the Maya civilization and a site of historical events deserving wider recognition. The journal will present research in accessible language without sacrificing academic rigor.

A Platform for Diverse Research

The initiative seeks to showcase findings from INAH’s academic body while providing a forum for professionals and researchers in social sciences. Submissions may include articles, reports, interviews, or other materials related to anthropological sciences and allied disciplines. The deadline for proposals is July 31, 2025.

According to the call for papers, texts must be written for general audiences to reach a broad readership. While not exhaustive, suggested research areas include:

  • Cultural dynamics, identity, and diversity
  • Migration and border studies
  • Social relationships with the environment
  • Gender and generational studies
  • Religion and rituals
  • Tourism and society
  • Ethnographies, historical studies, and archaeology

Special Sections and Inclusivity

The journal will feature a dedicated section for literary contributions, including short essays, narratives (short stories), and poetry. In a bid to honor the Maaya T’aan (Yucatec Maya) language, the publication will accept texts written in Maya accompanied by Spanish translations.

Margarito Molina Rendón emphasized that this marks the first editorial project of its kind from INAH Quintana Roo, inviting both researchers and the general public to participate. The inaugural issue of Ecos de la Costa Oriental is slated for publication in October 2025.
