Quintana Roo, Mexico — As part of efforts to reorganize the public transportation system in Quintana Roo, the Institute of Mobility (IMOVEQROO) will implement new measures to reduce accidents and improve service quality. These actions include the installation of speed governors and the advancement of pilot tests with electric buses in several cities across the state.

How Speed Governors Will Work

Rafael Hernández Kotasek, head of IMOVEQROO, explained that speed governors involve either reprogramming a vehicle’s software or installing a physical device, depending on the unit’s model. This system prevents drivers from exceeding the permitted speed limit.

"There are vans traveling from Playa del Carmen to Cancún at speeds over 120 km/h. With these devices, the limit will be set at 80 km/h, reducing the need for active supervision by inspectors," he stated.

In addition to speed control, clear passenger capacity limits will be enforced for vans and urban buses operating with overcrowding, particularly in Cancún, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum.

Pilot Tests with Electric Public Transportation

Simultaneously, IMOVEQROO is in the final phase of testing electric buses in Benito Juárez (Cancún), evaluating units up to 18 meters long to assess their range, dimensions, and required infrastructure.

"The current disorder in urban transportation, especially in Benito Juárez, forces us to seek sustainable and organized alternatives," Hernández Kotasek remarked.

A pilot program will also launch in Chetumal before the end of May, introducing electric or hybrid units. The city presents an additional challenge as it currently lacks established routes, requiring the design of efficient itineraries first.

Results of the Comprehensive Mobility Program by September

The Comprehensive Mobility Program, launched in May, will yield preliminary results by September. These findings will help establish a more structured traffic plan based on the actual needs of each area.

Prior to this, the Roadway Council will convene to analyze road conditions and determine which types of vehicles can operate on each route as part of a broader strategy for traffic management.
