Cancún, MX — The fare increase for public transport in Cancún will only be applied in 2026, once the majority of the bus fleet has been renewed, assured Rafael Hernández Kotasek, head of the Institute of Mobility (Imoveqroo).
In a brief interview, the official stated that during 2026, 40 percent of the buses from the concessionaires currently operating in Cancún—Turicún, Autocar, Bonfil, and Maya Caribe—will be renewed.
“This project is a fleet renewal process, but it will be gradual in 2026, and until that fleet renewal project is seen, no tariff decision will be made,” declared the official, ruling out a fare hike starting December 1.
In that sense, the official explained that this new transport model will be implemented gradually over two years.
He indicated that the state government will present to the local Congress in two weeks an initiative to reform the Mobility Law that contemplates a 30 percent subsidy for the new transport fares that will be applied in the future.
The subsidy is equivalent to 650 million pesos annually, once the system operates at full capacity in Benito Juárez, Isla Mujeres, Playa del Carmen, and Chetumal.
According to the official, the four concessionaires in Cancún have already signed a preliminary agreement in which they accept the rules of the new model, although they will have to ratify it once the law comes into effect.
He added that on December 1, this new model will begin to be applied, with new routes and the commissioning of some new buses.
