In a bid to enhance the connectivity of the Mayan Train with the cities it traverses, the Yucatan government has announced that the electric transport system, IE-Tram, will introduce a new stop to the railway project on August 3.

The new route will extend from the Umán station to La Plancha, in Mérida. This addition means that there will now be two destinations linked by the Mayan Train, as the same mode of transport has been connecting with the Teya station since December 2021.

The IE-Tram system operates a 100% electric vehicle, a hybrid of a tram and a bus. This not only results in zero emissions but also significantly reduces noise pollution. Yucatan's governor, Mauricio Vila, revealed in a recent press conference that the project necessitated an investment of 2,820 million pesos. The funding was sourced 60% from the state, 24% from Banobras, and 16% from private industry. To power the transport, the Nachi Cocom photovoltaic plant was established, requiring an investment of 193 million pesos.
