Maya Train Hotel Shut Down Over Permit Issues

Campeche — Initially reported by Deputy Rubén Moreira Valdez, the closure of Hotel Edzná was confirmed this Wednesday. The hotel is located in the influence area of the Edzná archaeological zone and is part of the complementary works of the Maya Train in the state of Campeche.

Moreira Valdez, who is also the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) delegate in Campeche, first announced the news in a jocular manner, stating that it was a closure “for security” and due to the absence of customers.

However, it was later revealed that after a visit by Federal Tourism Secretary Josefina Rodríguez Zamora, the Campeche Municipality closed Hotel Edzná.

Since this week, the tourist property has ceased operations provisionally, while the responsible state-owned company complies with requirements demanded by the Campeche Municipality, including land use and civil protection permits.

The Federal Government invested approximately 1,017 million pesos in the construction of the 5-star hotel with 139 rooms.

During the administration of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the Armed Forces transitioned from being infrastructure builders for the government to administrators of the Maya Train, hotels, and the Mexicana de Aviación airline.

In all these cases, these works lack sufficient income due to the absence of customers.
