Fire in Playa del Carmen Linked to Homeless Encampment

Firefighters responding to a blaze in a vacant lot in Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen, Mexico — A fire broke out in a vacant lot in the Colosio neighborhood, reportedly started by homeless individuals who fled the scene after igniting accumulated trash.

The incident occurred around 12:30 a.m. on Avenida 15, when residents detected a strong smell of smoke and, upon waking, discovered flames in a lot on Calle 70 where someone had set fire to a pile of garbage.

An immediate call was made to 911, requesting the presence of firefighters, who arrived at the scene with a fire engine and began operations to control the flames. The fire was extinguished within minutes, but it had already spread to dry leaves and branches scattered across the lot.

According to neighbors, a group of homeless individuals was in the vicinity and may have started the fire in an attempt to prepare food, but it got out of control.
