Holbox, Quintana Roo — Security operations on the island of Holbox are facing mounting criticism from residents who describe a “revolving door” justice system that allows suspected criminals to regain their freedom almost as quickly as they are detained.
While military forces and the State Prosecutor’s Office conduct raids and closures of establishments allegedly linked to illicit activities, the community reports that most detainees are released shortly after arrest, with only one individual known as “El Pinki” or “Ranita” formally charged.
Residents allege that other individuals identified by the community as participants in criminal activities have regained their freedom after allegedly making irregular payments, allowing them to resume operations without legal consequences.
Suspected Information Leaks
One of the most concerning patterns highlighted by residents is the disappearance of suspected criminals just before authorities arrive to conduct operations. This suggests possible information leaks or serious coordination failures among security agencies.
“Due to the size of the municipality, everything is known here,” according to local reports, highlighting that community knowledge about criminal movements contrasts with authorities’ apparent inability to make arrests.
Community Demands
The Holbox community has called on municipal, state, and federal authorities to reconsider security strategies in the area. Residents demand that operations translate into solid investigations that prevent the immediate release of suspects, rather than serving as mere “displays of force.”
As a key tourism destination for the region, the island requires institutional presence that guarantees social peace and restores credibility in the justice system. Currently, residents report uncertainty as closed establishments resume operations and key criminal figures remain at large.
