COZUMEL, QRoo — The incidence of HIV among young people in Cozumel is generating concern among local health authorities. According to Dr. Ángel Mario González Hernández, there are currently 210 registered cases undergoing treatment, with at least two new diagnoses emerging each month in individuals between the ages of 17 and 25.

The specialist warned that many patients abandon their treatment regimens. When they decide to resume treatment, the disease has often advanced, which complicates its management. One of the frequent causes is not taking the condition seriously from its early stages.

Although treatment can be costly through private healthcare, patients receive medication and laboratory studies at no cost in government clinics, which facilitates the follow-up and control of the disease.

González Hernández issued a call to the young population to become informed, attend periodic testing, and continue with their treatments to maintain a better quality of life.
