Quintana Roo, Mexico — This Thursday, June 19, Quintana Roo awoke to overcast skies and hot conditions, which are expected to persist throughout the day, according to a report from the State Meteorological Service. The combination of moisture carried by Hurricane Erick from the Pacific and a low-pressure channel southeast of the country will lead to heavy to very heavy rainfall in several municipalities, accompanied by electrical storms and strong wind gusts.
Intense Rainfall and Wind Gusts Expected
The influx of tropical maritime air will cause areas such as Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Othón P. Blanco, and Bacalar to experience the highest rainfall accumulations, with localized downpours. Meanwhile, Benito Juárez (Cancún), Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and José María Morelos are forecast to see heavy showers with electrical activity, raising concerns about potential flooding.
Isla Mujeres and Lázaro Cárdenas will endure heat indices reaching up to 41°C, while most of the state will see maximum temperatures between 32°C and 38°C, with overnight lows of 22°C to 29°C by Friday morning.
Winds will blow from the east and southeast at speeds of 25 to 35 km/h, with coastal gusts potentially exceeding 70 km/h. Authorities have urged caution for small vessels and swimmers due to elevated waves and sudden sea-level changes, particularly during early morning and evening tides.
Coastal Conditions and Safety Measures
In coastal municipalities like Cozumel and Puerto Morelos, skies will be partly cloudy with intermittent dense cloud cover, possibly resulting in light to moderate rainfall. Local officials remain on alert for potential water accumulation and falling branches due to strong winds.
Heat and high tides will dominate the day, with urban areas experiencing the most intense conditions. Residents are advised to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged sun exposure, and take extra precautions for children and the elderly.
Tide fluctuations will vary by location, with sunrise occurring between 6:06 AM and 6:19 AM and sunset around 7:30 PM. Quintana Roo’s Civil Protection agency has urged the public to monitor official updates, avoid littering to prevent drainage blockages, and prepare emergency kits in case of severe storms or power outages.
