Cancún, Mexico — An intense rainstorm accompanied by electrical activity on Friday evening caused severe flooding and significant complications for mobility across various parts of the city.

Major avenues were affected by water accumulation, including Avenida 135, Chac Mool, Ruta 5, Ruta 4, Bonampak, a section of Tulum Avenue at El Crucero, and Yaxchilán. As a result, hundreds of people faced difficulties returning to their homes after the workday, and the busiest bus stops, such as those at Plaza Las Américas and El Crucero, were overwhelmed.

Regarding stranded vehicles, an initial report indicated that assistance was provided to at least eight motorists, though it was specified that patrols would continue to assist citizens if required.

In response to the situation, authorities reported that various operations were activated to address the impacts. "We are coordinating operations in different parts of the city due to the heavy rains with electrical activity," the Directorate of Transit stated in a communication.

Notable actions included the "Operativo Carrusel" on Luis Donaldo Colosio Boulevard, preventive patrols by Transit officials, as well as unclogging and cleaning of drains by Public Services personnel.

For its part, Civil Protection alerted that the heavy, localized rains with electrical discharges would continue through Friday night and into the early hours of Saturday. Given the persistence of the rainfall, the public was urged to heed official reports and collaborate with authorities to reduce risks, especially in neighborhoods such as Villas Otoch Paraíso and on the avenues where the most significant impacts were concentrated.
