Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Two people were seriously injured Saturday morning in a head-on collision on Federal Highway 307 near Paamul, south of Playa del Carmen.
The crash occurred shortly before 8:00 a.m. near the Hard Rock hotel turnaround, when a blue Volkswagen Jetta traveling north crossed the median and entered the opposite lane for reasons still unknown.
A white Volkswagen Jetta heading south was unable to avoid the collision. The impact sent the blue car spinning off the road, while the white vehicle sustained severe damage and remained on the highway.
Emergency personnel rescued both drivers and transported them to a hospital in critical condition, under code red protocol.
National Guard officers arrived minutes after the crash and secured the area. A tow truck removed the vehicles and took them to an impound lot.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the accident and will determine responsibility.
