Tepich, Mexico — Armed men in a sedan opened fire on children outside a sports complex in Tepich on Monday, wounding one boy and kidnapping another in an attack that has drawn no official response from authorities.

The shooting occurred in front of the local sports complex, a public space meant for recreation, highlighting security concerns in rural areas of Felipe Carrillo Puerto municipality under Mayor Maricarmen Hernández Solís.

According to residents, the attackers fired at the children as they tried to flee. One boy escaped with a gunshot wound that grazed his head, while a second child was forced into the attackers’ vehicle and driven away to an unknown location.

“While trying to run to avoid being captured, the aggressors shot at him,” the surviving victim reportedly said of the attack.

Emergency response to the incident appeared disjointed. Although Red Cross paramedics were called to treat the injured child, the service was canceled minutes later with the explanation that “nothing had happened.” The State Prosecutor’s Office has not issued any official report about the attack.

No authorities have activated search alerts or confirmed hospital admissions related to the incident. The lack of information leaves victims’ families in a state of vulnerability and has fueled concerns about institutional indifference to violence affecting Maya communities.

Residents of Tepich now live in fear, with the prosecutor’s office failing to issue any search bulletins for the missing child. The community is demanding answers about the boy’s whereabouts and calling for the case not to be dismissed due to lack of evidence.
