Gunmen Fire at Least 30 Shots in Playa del Carmen Neighborhood, Prompting Major Police Response

Police officers and emergency vehicles at the scene of a shooting in Playa del Carmen's La Esperanza neighborhood

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A barrage of gunfire early Friday morning in the informal settlement of La Esperanza de In House prompted a large-scale mobilization of emergency services and security forces, though no injuries were reported.

Witnesses reported hearing at least 30 shots, causing alarm among residents who sheltered in their homes. The incident occurred in an area locals described as having high crime rates.

Police responded to emergency calls and confirmed a residence had sustained multiple bullet impacts to its facade. Despite the intensity of the attack, authorities reported only material damage to the property.

The suspects fled before police arrived, and no arrests were made. Officers cordoned off the area to conduct an investigation and collect ballistic evidence for the case file.

The attack has raised questions among residents about the effectiveness of security strategies implemented by Public Security head Carlos Montesinos, particularly in areas considered crime hotspots. Authorities have not yet announced any lines of investigation or a possible motive for the shooting.
