A police vehicle damaged by gunfire on a dirt road in Puerto Aventuras, Quintana Roo

Puerto Aventuras, Quintana Roo — Gunmen opened fire on a police commander’s vehicle in a neighborhood south of Puerto Aventuras on Thursday, prompting a major security response and the arrest of one suspect.

The attack targeted the commander identified by the call sign “Lobo,” who is assigned to the Puerto Aventuras area. According to initial reports, a patrol from the Public Security Department was advancing toward a predetermined location when suspects on a motorcycle intercepted it on a dirt road near Rancho San Josesito.

The assailants fired on the official vehicle, creating a tense confrontation with police officers who returned fire and immediately requested backup.

Authorities activated a “code red” alert following the armed attack, leading to a rapid mobilization of security forces to the area to control the situation and launch a search operation for those responsible.

Police officers arrested one suspect allegedly involved in the incident. Authorities seized the individual and transported him via a Public Security Department helicopter to the State Prosecutor’s Office, where his legal status will be determined.

Despite the severity of the attack, officials reported no injuries among security personnel, with only material damage to the targeted patrol vehicle.

The incident occurred in an area where authorities from all three levels of government had confirmed they were conducting a search operation. It adds to recent violent events that have raised concerns about security effectiveness in the region, particularly in areas showing increased signs of organized crime activity.
