Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Quintana Roo — On International Crafts Day, Governor Mara Lezama reaffirmed her commitment to indigenous communities by declaring artisans a key element of the economic and cultural development of Quintana Roo.

During a visit to the community of X-pichil in the Mayan zone, the Governor highlighted the historical and symbolic value of artisanal work. She stated that each embroidery, hammock, or piece of carved wood represents the memory, identity, and heritage of the native peoples.

Preserving a Family Legacy

Accompanied by local artisans, she emphasized that behind each creation lies a family legacy passed down through generations. She noted that grandmothers and grandfathers teach traditional techniques—such as embroidery, weaving, warping, and wood carving—to girls, boys, and young people.

“That is why, in this humanist government with a feminist heart, we have decided to put artisans at the center of Quintana Roo’s development,” said Governor Mara Lezama.

Supporting Cultural Heritage

The head of the Executive branch reported that more than five thousand artisans in the state keep these practices alive, practices considered part of the state's cultural heritage. She emphasized that her administration is promoting initiatives such as "Artisans for Well-being," "Weaving Knowledge," "Women Learning," and community tourism projects.

These actions, she explained, seek to improve the living conditions of those who engage in this activity, promote the marketing of their products, and ensure that prosperity reaches their communities directly.

A Call to Value Artisanal Work

The Governor urged citizens to value artisanal work and avoid haggling over prices, emphasizing that every purchase contributes to preserving culture and generating opportunities for new generations.

She reiterated that her government's goal is to showcase Quintana Roo's handicrafts around the world, asserting that when the work of artisans prospers, the soul of Quintana Roo also flourishes.
