Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A gas leak at a house next to the Independencia de Mexico elementary school in the Villas del Sol neighborhood sickened 10 students and sent one girl to hospital, prompting officials to evacuate the campus as a precaution.
Emergency crews launched a large-scale response after initial reports suggested a student had carried explosive material into a school bathroom. When officers arrived, they instead detected the smell of gas coming from a residence next to the school.
School staff and students were evacuated as a preventive measure, and parents were notified to come and collect their children. The alert caused tension among the school community as families rushed to the campus.
Paramedics treated 10 minors who reported symptoms consistent with gas inhalation. Emergency personnel later ruled out the presence of any explosive material inside the school and inspected the neighboring home where the leak originated.
