Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A gas buildup while refilling a stationary propane tank caused a powerful explosion at a home in Playa del Carmen on Tuesday afternoon, leaving one man with severe burns.
The incident occurred around 3 p.m. in the Altaria Residencial neighborhood at the end of Avenida 125. Firefighters and civil protection personnel responded to the scene.
Preliminary reports indicate that workers were refilling a stationary propane tank when a leak inside the home allowed gas to accumulate. The explosion likely occurred when a spark ignited the gas.
The blast shattered windows and destroyed a door. A man identified as Cristian “N” suffered second- and third-degree burns across his body. It remains unclear whether he was a worker or a resident.
After receiving first aid from firefighters and paramedics, the injured man was taken to a private hospital for stabilization.
Firefighters rescued two dogs from the home, which also appeared to have suffered injuries and received veterinary care.
Emergency crews secured the area and conducted an investigation to determine the exact cause of the incident.
