Playa del Carmen — Municipal authorities have agreed to establish garbage collection points to provide waste collection service in the irregular settlements of the “Las Torres” area, in order to put an end to the continuous burning of waste.
Julieta Martín Azueta, Secretary of Public Services, confirmed that they have been providing this service for three weeks and so far have received no complaints or seen any problems. “We provide the collection service, but we do not go house to house,” she explained, noting that many streets in these irregular areas are not suitable for heavy vehicles, and there is underground wiring.
The agreement to establish these 11 points was made in a meeting with residents of this area, who also agreed to receive training on the management of these solid wastes. “Everything must be bagged and they cannot take out the garbage on days when collection does not occur,” commented the secretary, who said that collection takes place on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, between 6 a.m. and 2 p.m.
They asked residents to bag all their garbage and that the containers they create, which are made of wood, must have a minimum height for the convenience of the collectors.
It is worth remembering that residents of the Bali subdivision have protested on more than one occasion due to the smoke generated by the burning of garbage in this area.
Although much of it is brought clandestinely by vehicles from construction sites or other subdivisions, it is also common for residents of the irregular settlements to dispose of their waste in this manner.
