Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo — As part of a series of life-changing initiatives aimed at reintegrating individuals into the workforce and improving the well-being of those living with visual disabilities, Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa visited patients and their families who were beneficiaries of the First 2025 Pterygium Surgery Campaign.
At the IMSS Bienestar hospital in the island zone of Isla Mujeres, and accompanied by the honorary president of the Quintana Roo DIF System, Verónica Lezama, the head of the state executive highlighted that this joint support signifies dignity for patients who wish to recover their sight, not lose it.
“Pterygium is a condition that affects older adults, but also young people; sometimes, due to a lack of resources, they cannot get treatment and they lose their eyesight. In this humanist government with a feminist heart, we do not want that, which is why we offer completely free care, with sensitivity, to close inequality gaps and achieve true social justice,” said Governor Mara Lezama.
During this campaign, which ran from the 3rd to the 13th of this month, more than 300 free surgeries were performed for the well-being of those most in need from Benito Juárez, Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, Othón P. Blanco, Bacalar, José María Morelos, Felipe Carrillo Puerto, and Lázaro Cárdenas.
This is a joint effort with the State DIF, the Secretary of Health, IMSS Bienestar, the Public Beneficence office, and municipal governments, with the purpose of restoring sight, hope, and quality of life to those who need it most.
The initiative represented a state investment of 1 million 700 thousand pesos, but beyond the figures, this action reflected a real opportunity for over 300 people to improve their visual health, their well-being, and their independence.
Accompanying Mara Lezama on this visit were the municipal president Atenea Gómez Ricalde; the director of Public Beneficence, Claudia Gómez Verduzco; the State Secretary of Health, Flavio Carlos Rosado; and the director of the Integral Hospital of Isla Mujeres, Tharín Vidal.
