Cozumel, Mexico — In observance of World Sea Turtle Day, the Cozumel Parks and Museums Foundation (FPMC) has reinforced its dedication to protecting these emblematic species by reporting the registration of 91 nests at the Punta Sur Turtle Camp during the 2025 season. Of these, 15 belong to the green turtle (Chelonia mydas) and 76 to the loggerhead (Caretta caretta), both classified as endangered under Mexico’s NOM-059-SEMARNAT regulation.

Relocation and Monitoring Efforts

Biologist Ricardo Peralta Muñoz, head of the camp, explained that 17 nests were relocated as a preventive measure due to high tides. He emphasized the critical role of volunteers in daily and nightly patrols to identify tracks and safeguard egg deposits, ensuring optimal conditions for hatchling development.

Decades of Conservation Leadership

With 37 uninterrupted years of work, the FPMC is a pioneer in sea turtle protection on the island. As part of its ongoing efforts, the camp has organized weekly beach cleanups since the beginning of the year, supported by local communities, to remove debris that could obstruct or endanger turtles during nesting.

These initiatives have resulted in the removal of over two metric tons (2,143.65 kg) of tide-carried waste, significantly improving coastal ecosystem conditions and preserving local wildlife.

Collaborative Commitment

FPMC Director General Juanita Alonso Marrufo highlighted the importance of collaboration among civil society, volunteers, and authorities. She stated that such efforts strengthen the New Agreement for Wellbeing and Development of Quintana Roo, promoted by Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa, and underscored the necessity of joint action to build a sustainable future for generations to come.
