Cancun, Mexico — Elements of the Secretary of Citizen Security engaged in a shootout with four individuals outside the Kukulcán restaurant, located on the Puerto Juárez-Punta Sam highway, leading to their detention and the seizure of a firearm. It has emerged that these men may be implicated in the crime of extortion.
The Confrontation Near Kukulcán Restaurant
Information gathered at the scene detailed that around 2:00 PM on Saturday, State Police officers conducting investigative and intelligence work located four armed individuals inside the Kukulcán restaurant in supermanzana 86 on the road to Punta Sam.
The officers requested backup from their colleagues, as well as from the Cancun Municipal Police and the Mexican Navy (Secretaría de Marina). In this manner, they surrounded the establishment just as the suspects were exiting. Upon seeing the authorities, the suspects initiated a shootout.
Personnel from the Secretary of Citizen Security reported that no injuries were reported, as the situation was successfully controlled with the detention of the four suspects. They were transferred to State Police facilities for subsequent processing and presentation to the Public Prosecutor's Office.
Potential Extortion Motive
It was reported that these subjects apparently arrived at the restaurant to collect an extortion payment known as a "derecho de piso," or protection racket fee. It was also presumed that they could be related to further extortion collections from business owners and tenants in the area.
The State Attorney General's Office (Fiscalía General del Estado) will now be in charge of continuing the investigation into this event. The legal status of the detained individuals is expected to be determined in the coming hours.
