Playa del Carmen, QR. — The State Attorney General's Office (FGE) has confirmed the arrest of four individuals allegedly linked to a criminal network that used a dating application to contact their victims, drug them, and rob them of their belongings. The case has raised concerns among authorities due to the increasing use of this type of digital platform for criminal purposes.
According to the report, the implicated individuals—three men and one woman—were captured during an operation coordinated by agents from the Investigative Police. The arrests followed a report from a professional who stated he was drugged and assaulted after arranging a meeting through a dating application.
Detainees Used Dating App to Commit Robberies
The victim reported that he attended the meeting with a subject identified as Adrián “N”, who arrived accompanied by a woman, María Eneida “N”. During the encounter, she prepared drinks containing a substance that caused the victim to lose consciousness.
Meanwhile, the assailants let in two other accomplices, Juan José “N”, alias “Hunter,” and Rodrigo “N”, who took the opportunity to steal computers, watches, jewelry, telephones, televisions, and cash. They also used the victim's bank cards to make withdrawals totaling more than 392,000 pesos.
After regaining consciousness, the victim went to the FGE, which initiated an investigation with the support of security cameras and the tracking of financial movements. With this evidence, authorities managed to detain the four suspects at different locations in Playa del Carmen.
The detainees face charges for aggravated robbery and criminal association and have been sent to the Municipal Detention Center under justified pre-trial detention.
The FGE reported that the investigation continues to determine if the group was also operating in other municipalities such as Cancún and Tulum, using the same method through a dating application.
Authorities warned that the use of any dating application can involve risks when personal data is shared or meetings are arranged with strangers. They therefore urged citizens to take extreme precautions and report any suspicious situation to the emergency number 911 or the FGE's digital complaint portal.
With this case, the FGE seeks to alert the public about the misuse of dating applications as a means to commit crimes in tourist zones of the Mexican Caribbean.
