Cancún, Quintana Roo — Ildefonso Guajardo Villarreal, former Economy Secretary and T-MEC negotiator, proposed the creation of a temporary unemployment insurance to protect tourism workers affected by the economic slowdown in Quintana Roo.
Speaking before members of the Consejo Coordinador Empresarial del Caribe, Guajardo argued that beyond maintaining social programs, it is necessary to establish support mechanisms for people who lose their jobs temporarily due to low tourist activity. He said such support would allow thousands of families to weather the period of lower occupancy while the sector recovers.
Guajardo explained that the unemployment insurance could provide financial support for up to six months, aiming to give workers stability until the high season picks up again.
He also stressed that the proposal must be accompanied by a comprehensive tourism promotion strategy and greater coordination between the business sector and federal and state governments to strengthen Quintana Roo’s economy and preserve jobs.
