Tulum, Quintana Roo — A foreign woman lost her life on Friday morning following a multi-vehicle collision on Federal Highway 307, between Playa del Carmen and Tulum, near the Bahía Príncipe hotel complex. The victim, preliminarily identified as a tourist of East Asian appearance and U.S. nationality, was traveling with her husband and their three children toward the municipality of Tulum when the incident occurred.
According to witnesses, the family was moving in a Mitsubishi Outlander SUV when, during an overtaking maneuver, the driver—who later died—rear-ended a truck that was stopped on the shoulder due to a mechanical failure. The impact was so severe that the family’s SUV was completely destroyed and considered a total loss.
After the initial collision, the out-of-control vehicle veered into another car: a compact Hyundai with Quintana Roo license plates, carrying a family on their way to spend the day at Xel-Há park. This second impact also left the occupants with injuries, though the severity of each case has not yet been confirmed.
The woman driving the Mitsubishi was ejected and lay on the pavement, where paramedics confirmed she showed no signs of life. Her husband and the three minors sustained injuries and were transported to nearby hospitals.
Personnel from Civil Protection, paramedics, the National Guard’s Highway Division, State and Municipal Police officers, as well as staff from the State Attorney General’s Office arrived at the site and began the corresponding procedures. The scene caused significant traffic congestion, as the involved vehicles remained on the roadway and the body stayed in place awaiting forensic services.
Authorities continue gathering information to determine precisely how the sequence of the accident occurred and to assign responsibilities. Meanwhile, consular notification is expected for the affected family, whose vacation ended tragically on one of the most traveled routes in the Riviera Maya.
