Tulum, Quintana Roo — Police have arrested five suspects in connection with the attempted murder of a 15-year-old boy, an attack authorities say is linked to drug trafficking activities in the popular tourist destination.

Investigative police officers executed five arrest warrants against individuals suspected of involvement in the attempted homicide, which occurred on February 21 near the Yaxtulum neighborhood.

The detained suspects were identified as Andrés Fernando, alias “El Manito”; Fernando, alias “El Guacho”; Cristian Giovanni, alias “El Comandante”; José Rubén, alias “Nava”; and Jairo Israel. Authorities allege they are part of a criminal group operating in Tulum.

According to the investigation, the victim was allegedly abducted from inside a nightclub on Tulum Avenue. He was then transported by taxi to a dirt road near the Yaxtulum neighborhood, where he was reportedly shot three times and abandoned in the brush.

Despite his injuries, the teenager managed to escape the area and call for help. He was taken to a hospital and received prompt medical attention.

Following their arrest, the suspects were handed over to a judge, who ordered them held in preventative detention without bail. A hearing to determine their legal status is scheduled for March 5.

The State Prosecutor’s Office is continuing its investigation to determine if the suspects are connected to other criminal activities in the region.
