Breast Cancer Cases Rise 20% in Quintana Roo, Younger Patients Diagnosed

Cancún, Quintana Roo — A foundation in Quintana Roo has documented a roughly 20% increase in breast cancer cases, alongside a growing number of diagnoses in younger patients.

The Fundación Lazos de Vida provided direct accompaniment to about 1,640 people in 2025 and indirect support to more than 400 others, the organization said.

Its president, Ivonne Chimal, said approximately 80% of the cases the foundation handles are breast cancer, mainly in women. The group also supports patients with colon, kidney, lung, head, and bone cancers.

Diagnoses at younger ages

Chimal described the rise as worrying, noting that patients are being diagnosed at increasingly younger ages and that the foundation has observed more cases where the disease returns.

She stressed that cancer care must not be limited to medical treatment, but should also address patients’ emotional well-being because of the psychological impact of receiving a cancer diagnosis.

A valuable support network

The foundation provides support in hospitals and at patients’ homes, including during chemotherapy sessions, and offers workshops, medical talks, and emotional support activities.

According to Chimal, a cancer diagnosis can generate fear, anxiety, and depression, which in some cases leads patients to reject or interrupt their treatment. The organization aims to show them they are not alone and to accompany them through the different stages of the process.

Prevention and early detection

The foundation also emphasizes the importance of prevention and timely detection, along with maintaining a proper diet, regular physical activity, and emotional health.

Its message is that people should not wait for symptoms to appear before seeking medical review, since early detection can lead to a timely diagnosis and better treatment options.
