The Solidaridad government, led by Mayor Estefanía Mercado, hosted the inaugural "Paws on the Beach Race" at Cisne beach, a known pet-friendly location. Mayor Mercado, accompanied by her pet, "El Güero", participated in the event, underscoring the government's commitment to animal welfare.

The event was a celebration of community, joy, and most importantly, the bond we share with our pets. During the race, Mayor Mercado announced that renovation work had begun at the Animal Control, Assistance, and Zoonosis Center (CENCAAZ) the previous Monday.

She emphasized the government's efforts to improve services for rescued animals, "We're working to create a suitable environment with the right facilities and specialized equipment. Our aim is to ensure that every animal in our care receives the attention it deserves."

Mayor Mercado also announced plans for Animal Welfare Brigades. This initiative will offer services such as sterilization, vaccination, and education on responsible pet ownership throughout all neighborhoods and communities in Solidaridad.

She stressed the importance of animal welfare as a fundamental right, pledging to work closely with the Prosecutor's Office to combat animal abuse. She stated, "In Playa del Carmen, we will not tolerate any form of cruelty against animals. Those who think they can harm animals without facing consequences are mistaken. We will stand up for those who can't speak for themselves."

As the sun rose over the Platinum-rated beach, Mayor Mercado thanked all participants for joining the race, which she described as more than just a recreational event. "It's a symbol of what we can achieve together as a community: a more humane, conscious, and respectful Solidaridad for all life forms."

Eduardo Asencio, honorary president of the Comprehensive Family Development System (DIF), said the 900-meter race on the sandy beach aimed to promote family recreation, pet welfare, and healthy coexistence. "This event demonstrates our commitment to animal welfare and the importance of recreational activities for our physical and emotional health. I want to commend the tireless work of our mayor, Estefanía Mercado, for her unwavering commitment to animal welfare."

The race concluded with awards and medals being presented to the winners and all participants.
