Tulum Restaurant Fire Quickly Contained by Emergency Crews

Tourists and passersby watch as fire spreads at Gitano restaurant in Tulum

Tulum, Quintana Roo — An intense mobilization of emergency teams was recorded in Tulum’s hotel zone after one of the palapas at the Gitano restaurant, located at kilometer 7, became engulfed in flames, causing concern among workers and visitors.

The fire spread rapidly due to the nature of the structure’s material, generating a dense column of smoke visible from various points along the tourist corridor. Tourists and passersby stopped to watch as the fire advanced within seconds, while the establishment’s staff tried to ensure the safety of those nearby.

Elements of the Fire Department and the Civil Protection Directorate responded immediately to extinguish the fire and reduce the risk of it reaching other areas of the restaurant or adjacent establishments.

Containment efforts lasted several minutes until the incident was fully brought under control. Personnel from ZOFEMAT also intervened to expedite vehicular traffic and facilitate access for emergency units.

Authorities confirmed that no one was injured and that damage was limited to the affected structure. Although the exact cause has not yet been determined, initial lines of investigation point to the possibility of a short circuit as the origin of the fire.

The competent authority will determine, after corresponding evaluations, what caused the incident and whether there are responsibilities to be defined. Meanwhile, the area remained cordoned off to allow inspection work and ensure the safety of those passing through.
