Mexico City — Mexico’s Federal Prosecutor’s Office (FGR) has arrested a suspect believed to be part of a transnational criminal organization that traded drugs for weapons between Mexico and the United States.
David ‘N’ was taken into custody at the Nogales border crossing in Sonora by Federal Police Ministerial officers with support from Interpol, the FGR said in a statement.
The investigation alleges the network illegally transported narcotics into the US, where they were exchanged for firearms and ammunition that were then smuggled back into Mexico.
After the arrest, federal prosecutors presented evidence before a judge, who ordered the suspect held on charges of organized crime for the purpose of committing health-related offenses — specifically, exporting narcotics listed in Article 193 of the Federal Penal Code.
The judge imposed preventive detention as a precautionary measure and set a three-month deadline for the completion of the supplementary investigation.
