Chetumal — A maritime transport vessel operated by the company Water Jet, servicing the Chetumal–San Pedro, Belize route, capsized on Sunday morning after striking a small islet while navigating in Belizean waters. The incident prompted the immediate activation of emergency protocols by the Belize Coast Guard, which successfully rescued all passengers and crew members.

According to preliminary information released by the Belize Coast Guard, the mishap occurred approximately 20 nautical miles from the island of San Pedro. The vessel sustained a severe impact to its hull after colliding with a rocky formation that was poorly visible due to sea conditions.

Following the impact, the boat began to partially sink, generating moments of panic among the passengers. However, the crew activated the life vests and issued a distress call that was answered within minutes by maritime rescue units.

Elements of the Coast Guard arrived at the accident site and managed to evacuate all occupants, who were then transported to the San Pedro dock. Subsequently, they were taken to a local hospital for medical assessment, primarily for potential cases of hypothermia, nervous shock, and minor injuries.

Authorities have not reported any individuals in serious condition or fatalities at this time. However, an investigation has been launched to determine the exact causes of the accident, as well as the responsibility of the shipping company that operated the vessel.

The company responsible for the route reported that it will provide support to the passengers and cooperate with authorities during the investigation process. It also stated that it will review its navigation procedures in the area, which is known for its rocky formations and shallow waters.

Belizean maritime authorities have called on companies operating in the region to exercise extreme caution, especially during seasons where visibility can be affected by sudden weather changes.
