Federal Judge Orders Preventive Detention for Tequila Mayor Arrested in ‘Operation Enjambre’

Mayor Diego Rivera Navarro of Tequila, Jalisco, arrested in federal Operation Enjambre

Tequila, Mexico — A federal judge ordered preventive detention for the mayor of Tequila, Jalisco, Diego Rivera Navarro, who authorities arrested recently as part of a federal operation dubbed “Enjambre.”

The Federal Prosecutor’s Office (FGR) is investigating the mayor for his alleged involvement in the 2021 kidnapping of Guillermo Cordero García, then a Morena party candidate for municipal president, and his substitute Julio Alejandro García Gutiérrez.

Federal authorities said the kidnappings aimed to pressure the victims to withdraw from the municipal election process.

After his capture, the judge ruled that the mayor remain in preventive detention at the federal Altiplano prison while the investigation and judicial process proceed.

The arrest is part of federal actions against alleged links between local authorities and criminal structures, within the national strategy against corruption and organized crime.
