270kg Cocaine Seized in Mexico City Airport Drug Bust

Authorities display seized cocaine packages at Mexico City International Airport

Mexico City, Mexico — Four people were arrested and 270 kilograms of cocaine destined for a flight to Tijuana were seized. Authorities say they located 271 wrapped packages of cocaine bound for Baja California on a weekend flight.

This Monday, the Navy Secretariat and the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) reported the detention of four people involved in drug trafficking at the Mexico City International Airport (AICM).

The November 21 operation was led by Navy members with support from the Attorney General’s Office (FGR). The detainees, they say, are part of a known network that smuggled drug packages on commercial flights bound for Tijuana, Baja California.

“As a result of inter-institutional coordination, elements of the Navy Secretariat, in coordination with the Attorney General’s Office (FGR), seized 271 packages with an approximate weight of 270 kilograms of cocaine,” authorities stated.

“The seizure occurs after field and office work that uncovered evidence of a drug trafficking network that was bringing packages into the country on commercial flights bound for Tijuana, Baja California,” authorities said.

The packages reached the flights without undergoing the required radiological inspection or the necessary procedures for their shipment, explained the FGR.

“As a result of these actions, on November 21 personnel from the Naval Airport Protection Unit detained four people in Terminal 2 of AICM with various bundles, in which the alleged drugs were found,” reported the FGR.

Authorities say the seized narcotics represent an estimated economic impact of 92,048,498 in national currency on organized crime.
