Cancún, Quintana Roo — José "N," a 58-year-old passenger aboard a Transporte Terrestre Estatal (TTE) unit, died Wednesday afternoon from injuries sustained in a severe traffic collision on Sunday. The accident occurred at the intersection of Miguel Hidalgo Avenue (Route 5) and Lombardo Toledano Avenue when the TTE driver, identified as José Luis "N," ran a red light and was struck by two vehicles.
Fatal Consequences of Negligence
José, who had been traveling in TTE unit number 222, suffered multiple fractures and persistent hemorrhaging, leaving him in critical condition until his death at 12:40 p.m. on Wednesday. His family had urgently sought blood donors on Tuesday in a desperate attempt to save his life.
Relatives allege that the insurance company Quálitas obstructed medical care by conditioning the issuance of medical passes on the family signing a legal waiver absolving the driver of responsibility. "They pressured us to forgive the driver so he wouldn’t face consequences," a family member stated.
Legal Uncertainty and Outcry
The Quintana Roo State Attorney General’s Office has yet to clarify the legal status of the TTE driver. Although the 48-hour legal window for detention expired on Tuesday, authorities have not confirmed whether he was released or presented before a judge for potential charges of negligent homicide.
José is the first fatality from the crash, though seven others sustained injuries of varying severity. Several victims have also reported being pressured to drop legal claims.
The grieving family has demanded accountability, emphasizing that the driver’s recklessness caused the tragedy. "We want justice. His negligence took a life," a relative said.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities determine the next steps in the case.
