TULUM, Quintana Roo — Violence has once again erupted in one of the main showcases of the Mexican Caribbean. In the early hours of Friday, January 9, 2026, an electronic music festival in Tulum became the scene of an execution, an incident that authorities attempted to conceal by prioritizing the tourist narrative over public safety.
The Pattern of Violence Shaking Festivals in Tulum
A new violent incident shook the tourist destination of Tulum, adding to a series of episodes recorded in Quintana Roo that have called security into question. This attack occurred during the early hours of Friday, January 9, 2026, while the “Themplo” event still gathered hundreds of people, mostly foreign tourists.
The execution took place at the main entrance, in the area of Kukulkán Avenue. Several sources identified the event, held in the coastal zone, as an international electronic music festival.
- Event identification: The event was mentioned under two different names: “Themplo” and the “Solomun Tulum” festival, held at the “Tehmplo” bar.
- Precise location: The incident occurred at the intersection of Kukulkán Avenue and the Boca Paila highway, according to unofficial data.
Chronology of the Direct Attack
According to preliminary information, armed hitmen fired directly at the victim, who was killed by gunshots. The body remained lying for several minutes in the middle of the public road or on a dirt path near the event, while attempts were made to control the scene.
The details of the homicide are precise:
- The victim, a male identified as a temporary worker by the Quintana Roo Attorney General’s Office (FGE), received at least two gunshot wounds.
- The wounds were located in the chest and back.
- Initial forensic examinations indicated the use of a 9-millimeter caliber firearm, with at least six shots fired at the scene.
- The deceased was wearing a black t-shirt with the “Themplo” logo, and his body was found, according to other versions, next to the bathrooms of the premises where the party was taking place.
The Official Opacity and Collapse of Internal Security
The attempt at opacity by authorities to avoid damaging the destination’s image during peak tourist season was quickly exposed. Although security corporations deployed a discreet operation and avoided issuing immediate information, the strategy fell apart due to dissemination by attendees and family members on social media, which forced authorities to indirectly acknowledge the homicide.
This incident exposed the fragility of security schemes at mass events due to two key points:
- Police obstruction: Initial reports indicate that local police officers were unable to enter the site or gain immediate access to the premises at the time of the incident.
- Reason for the blockade: The difficulty in entering was attributed to obstructions by the venue’s administration.
There were no arrests at the site. An ambulance arrived later to confirm the victim’s death, followed by security agents and forensic experts to remove the body.
The Investigation and the Shadow of Drug Trafficking
The Quintana Roo Attorney General’s Office (FGE) reported the opening of an investigation file for the crime of aggravated homicide, against this male. The FGE detailed that authorities from all three levels of government are working in a coordinated manner to find those responsible for what is considered a direct attack.
As the main line of investigation, the FGE is analyzing the possible relationship of the incident with drug trafficking activities, without ruling out other hypotheses. However, authorities had not issued an official statement with further details about the victim’s identity or the progress of the investigation. The official report from the attorney general’s office claimed that the attack did not endanger the safety of event attendees.
This attempt to minimize what occurred, under the argument of protecting tourism, demonstrated that the government’s priority remains safeguarding the tourist narrative over the right to information and public safety.
