CANCUN, Q. ROO — Golfer Eugenio López-Chacarra, the former world number two amateur, is set to compete in the Tulum Championship at PGA Riviera Maya. The event, scheduled for April 16-19 at the Tulum Country Club, marks the only stop of the Korn Ferry Tour in Mexico.
López-Chacarra’s path back to elite golf recently culminated with a victory at the 2025 Hero Indian Open on the DP World Tour. That win has positioned him as one of the Spanish players with the greatest potential on the international professional circuit. He was trained at Oklahoma State University, where he was an All-American.
He will participate in the tournament via a sponsor exemption.
“Adding Eugenio Chacarra to the Tulum Championship field is a clear example of the strategy we have built with conviction: to create golf destinations capable of attracting the best competitions and the best talent,” said Gonzalo Pan de Soraluce, Global Director of Golf Strategy for Piñero's Real Estate & Golf division. “The fact that a player of his caliber, one of the most recognized young players on the DP World Tour, has requested one of the tournament's exemptions reflects the interest this vision is generating.”
Exemptions Awarded to Promising Young Talent
That strategic vision is further reflected in the other players confirmed via sponsor exemption.
American Lunden Esterline, aged 16, is among the most prominent figures in junior golf in his country. He is the champion of the 2025 Boys' Junior PGA Championship, where he won with a historic score of -19. That victory propelled him to the US Junior Ryder Cup Team and places him among the most followed prospects of the 2027 class. He has given a verbal commitment to attend Auburn University.
Also joining via exemption is Bruno Marques, a 19-year-old from Mallorca. He combines his studies at Nova Southeastern University in Florida with competition in NCAA Division II.
Tournament Details and Prestigious Venue
The three players will join the field for the Tulum Championship, a 72-hole tournament. It will be held at PGA Riviera Maya, a course designed by Robert Trent Jones II that integrates jungle, mangroves, and cenotes into its layout. The course was recognized as Mexico's Best Golf Course by the World Golf Awards in both 2024 and 2025. It is also the only course in the country affiliated with the PGA of America.
The tournament features a purse of one million dollars with 500 Korn Ferry Tour points at stake. It concludes the series of five events in Latin America on the tour, which develops future PGA TOUR stars.
