Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — The municipal government of Playa del Carmen, led by Mayor Estefanía Mercado, has inaugurated the cultural festival México en Playa del Carmen, with Querétaro as the guest municipality. The event, organized through the Municipal Institute of Culture and the Arts, the Secretariat of Tourism, and the Secretariat of Economic Development and Investment Attraction, aims to promote cultural exchange and elevate the city as a hub for cultural tourism.
A Celebration of Artistic Diversity
The festival, which runs until May 31, kicked off with performances by the Orquesta Típica de Playa del Carmen, Santuario Reggae, Madera Viva Rumba, Xaha, and Korazound. Present at the opening ceremony were Tourism Secretary Estefanía Hernández, Economic Development Secretary Antón Bojórquez, and Culture Secretary Ernesto Martínez. Mariana Ortiz Cabrera, Secretary of Tourism for Querétaro, also attended as a special guest.
Artists from both municipalities expressed gratitude to the Playa del Carmen government for creating opportunities to showcase local and national talent. The festival’s primary objective is to foster artistic dialogue and cultural exchange between communities.
Free Workshops and Exhibitions
Featuring 100 artists from Querétaro and over 200 from Playa del Carmen, the festival offers free programming, including masterclasses and workshops at the School of Artistic Initiation. The Art Gallery has also opened the exhibition Colectiva de Artistas Queretanos, showcasing 35 works by 22 Querétaro-based artists. The exhibition, displaying both traditional and contemporary scenes, will remain open until May 30.
A Diverse Cultural Program
Held daily at 7:00 PM in Plaza 28 de Julio, the festival includes musical performances spanning reggae, ska, jazz, huapango, flamenco, marimba, symphonic and traditional music, theater productions, storytelling, contemporary circus acts, and multidisciplinary collectives. An artisan market will also be featured on the plaza’s esplanade.
Mayor Estefanía Mercado emphasized the festival’s role in strengthening artistic dialogue, celebrating Mexico’s cultural diversity, and solidifying Playa del Carmen’s reputation as a premier destination for cultural tourism.
