Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Municipal President Estefanía Mercado has called for an open citizen dialogue to regulate the use of scooters in Playa del Carmen, aiming to establish solutions that ensure harmonious coexistence between riders and pedestrians. The move comes amid growing concerns over uncontrolled scooter usage, which has led to accidents, fear, and frustration among residents due to high-speed riding on sidewalks and disregard for pedestrian crossings.
Addressing Safety Concerns
Mercado emphasized that while alternative mobility options are welcome, they must be practiced with respect and caution, particularly toward children, the elderly, and pedestrians. "In the Fourth Transformation, decisions are not made from desks or in isolation—they are made in community and with a human perspective," Mercado stated. "That is why I propose opening a dialogue to responsibly regulate scooter use, listening to both riders and those who feel affected today. The challenge is clear: protect everyone without hindering the progress of alternative mobility."
Call for Public Participation
The municipal administration has invited citizens to share their proposals and opinions through the city government’s official social media channels. The goal is to develop fair and responsible regulations that prioritize community safety. Mercado reiterated that dialogue will be the pathway to solutions centered on collective well-being. "Prosperity begins when mobility is safe for everyone," she affirmed.
The initiative underscores the city’s commitment to fostering orderly and inclusive urban mobility while addressing the immediate risks posed by unregulated scooter operations.
