Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Estefanía Mercado filed her registration for Morena’s internal process to lead the party’s municipal coordination in Playa del Carmen, accompanied by members who helped found the ruling party.
Mercado is seeking the Municipal Coordination of the Committees for the Defense of the Transformation and National Sovereignty, the grassroots structure through which Morena organizes its supporters locally.
During the event, she praised the record of those who took part in Morena’s founding and stressed the importance of preserving the movement’s principles while opening space for new generations.
“Today I am filing my registration with the conviction of contributing to the organization of our movement in Playa del Carmen. I do so with respect for those who founded Morena, with a willingness to listen and with a commitment to work alongside you,” she said.
Mercado Calls for Dialogue and Renewal
Mercado invoked the values that gave rise to the Fourth Transformation, the political project of former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador, and pointed to the leadership of President Claudia Sheinbaum.
“I believe that honoring the history of our movement also means opening the doors to new generations, listening to new voices and adding new ideas, without abandoning our principles,” she said.
She also addressed what she described as unfinished challenges in building a fairer society, singling out racism, classism and disinformation.
“The good news is that these threats do not define the heart of our people. Mexico is much bigger than prejudice, division and private interests,” she said.
Mercado acknowledged that efforts to transform the country require keeping channels of dialogue open, hearing differing opinions and correcting what still needs fixing.
“I know there are still challenges. That there are things to correct, much to listen to and much to build,” she said.
She closed by emphasizing the need to strengthen the movement’s territorial organization, bring the Defense Committees together and coordinate community work across Playa del Carmen as part of her campaign platform.
Among those attending the filing were Playa del Carmen founders and party figures Juan José Uribe, Silvia Gutiérrez, Juliana Hernández, Luis Meléndez, José Guadalupe López, José Palma Antón Bojórquez, Andrea Olvera, Vianca González, María Luz del Alba, Feliciano Teh, Sergio Lugo, Alejandro Micet and Agustín Aguilar.
