Estefanía Mercado Confirms 2027 Reelection Bid for Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Mayor Estefanía Mercado confirmed Tuesday that she will seek reelection in 2027, aiming to lead the municipality for a second consecutive term.

In an interview, Mercado said that is the political route she intends to follow, but she conditioned her bid on support from Playa del Carmen residents and on meeting the internal procedure Morena will set for selecting candidates.

She said she will not move ahead of the party’s timeline and will wait for Morena to issue its call. Once the process formally opens, she plans to register for the municipal coordination post and, from there, compete for the nomination.

The announcement is one of Mercado’s first direct public statements about her aspirations for the 2027 election, when the Playa del Carmen mayoralty will again be on the ballot.

Her potential candidacy is not yet final. In addition to the citizen support she cited, it must clear Morena’s internal process and any decisions the party and its allies make ahead of local elections.

Political Path From PVEM to Morena

Mercado’s recent political career has been tied mainly to the forces that make up the so-called Fourth Transformation bloc in Quintana Roo.

She first won a seat in the 17th Legislature of the Quintana Roo Congress under the Green Party (PVEM) and initially led its caucus. In early 2024, she left the PVEM bench to join Morena’s caucus during the political process that preceded the mayoral nomination for Solidaridad, today Playa del Carmen.

She was later nominated for mayor as part of the coalition Let’s Keep Making History, which brought together Morena, the PVEM and the Labor Party (PT). The alliance backed her candidacy and carried her to the municipal presidency.

The PT was not part of her direct party affiliation, but it formed part of the coalition that supported her bid.

That trajectory matters now as Mercado specifically pointed to Morena’s internal call as the route she will follow to try to obtain the municipal nomination again.

Figures Reported by Her Administration

Mercado’s aspiration comes while she remains in office and her administration presents results in security, infrastructure and public services. The available figures should be distinguished between those released by the municipal government itself and those produced by polling firms.

According to data released by the Playa del Carmen city council, the municipality recorded a 55 percent reduction in intentional homicides in June 2026. The figure comes from official information issued by the administration, not from an independent measurement.

On infrastructure and urban services, the city said its downtown recovery plan included 186 square meters of pothole patching, cleaning of 1,537 storm drains, desilting of 10 absorption wells and painting of 18,600 linear meters of curbs.

The administration also reported rehabilitation of 226 street lights along the stretch between Universidades Avenue and the Cristo Rey entrance. Another project it reported was the rehabilitation of Flor de Ciruelo Avenue, with an investment of more than 25 million pesos benefiting an estimated 16,000 residents.

These figures are part of results publicly presented by the administration led by Mercado and correspond to information generated and disseminated by her government.

Polls and Public Perception

Separately, several polling firms have included Mercado in their approval and performance measurements. Studies by firms such as RUBRUM have assessed mayors’ overall performance, public services, closeness to residents and security perception.

In different surveys, Mercado has ranked among the best-positioned mayors in Quintana Roo and has appeared prominently in national comparisons.

Other measurements released during her administration have placed her approval around or above 60 percent, putting her among the top state officials and, in some exercises, among the best-evaluated mayors nationally.

Those results depend on each firm’s methodology, sample, field dates and variables, and represent perception measurements taken at a specific time, not early election results.

Mercado’s announcement formally opens her route toward 2027. For now, she will remain head of the municipal government while waiting for Morena’s call, a process in which she intends to register for the municipal coordination and, later, the candidacy allowing her to compete for a second term.
