Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Coastal erosion has exposed a structure at Playa Pelícanos, a beach certified with the international Blue Flag distinction, revealing construction built on the sand dunes at the intersection of Calle 44 and CTM. The structure, built during the previous municipal administration, now remains closed due to safety risks.
Over several months, the sea gradually washed away the sand that supported the base of the steps, leaving the construction practically suspended. The erosion weakened the terrain, forcing authorities to restrict access as the ground gave way around the structure, creating a hazard for anyone attempting to descend to the shoreline.
The uneven ground and lack of firm foundation increase the risk of falls or injuries. Although Playa Pelícanos holds Blue Flag certification—which recognizes environmental quality, safety, and services—the natural dynamics of the coastline continue to reshape the area.
In the Mexican Caribbean, beaches are living systems subject to currents, tides, and weather phenomena. When rigid structures are installed on loose sand, the sea often reclaims its space. The area currently remains closed as a preventive measure, and officials advise the public not to attempt using the damaged steps, as the supporting sand has been washed away, creating an evident danger.
