Tulum, Mexico — The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) has approved the Environmental Impact Assessment (MIA) for the operation of the El Paraíso Hotel, Restaurant, and Beach Club. The project is located on the Costera Zona Arqueológica-Tulum-Boca Paila highway within the Tulum National Park.
Details of the Approved MIA
The project, presented by the company Comercializadora Ivera S.A. de C.V., seeks to regularize the operation of an existing tourist complex that offers lodging, food, spa, and beach club services.
The federal agency determined that the project is an activity without high environmental risk, as it does not contemplate new construction or expansions, but solely the continuation of the operation of infrastructure that has existed since before 1979.
According to the resolution, the establishment occupies a total surface area of 35,973 square meters, of which 22,580 square meters correspond to the operational area and 2,331 square meters to the built surface area.
Services and Operations Authorized by MIA
Services offered at the complex include 18 guest rooms, distributed as 10 standard rooms, one seaside house with six rooms, one cabin, and one staff room.
Additionally, the facility includes a restaurant with a cafeteria, kitchen, bar, dining area, bathrooms, and showers, as well as a spa constructed with regional materials and a beach club with removable furniture.
Procedure for Transparency and Environmental Conservation
The MIA states that the purpose of the procedure is to regularize the operation in accordance with the current environmental legal framework, in addition to implementing mitigation measures and environmental programs that allow for the conservation of the ecological balance of the Protected Natural Area.
Among the committed actions are the efficient use of water, reforestation programs, comprehensive waste management, and the adoption of good environmental practices to minimize impacts.
Finally, the project will now proceed to public consultation, as part of the transparency procedure established by Mexican environmental legislation.
