Cancún, Quintana Roo — Emergency crews responded to 18 water rescues on Cancún beaches Sunday, including a critical incident where firefighters performed CPR on a young man pulled unconscious from the sea at San Miguelito Beach.
The most serious situation occurred shortly after 7 p.m. when firefighters responded to a 911 emergency call reporting a swimmer struggling to stay afloat at kilometer 13.5 of the hotel zone.
Three lifeguards from the hotel zone fire station arrived to find a young man, approximately 21 years old, unconscious and without vital signs after being pulled from the water.
Firefighters immediately began cardiopulmonary resuscitation and continued until paramedics from a private ambulance arrived. Due to the emergency, firefighters assisted with transport in the ambulance, maintaining CPR until the patient was admitted to a Social Security clinic.
The swimmer was identified as David Alexander, approximately 20 years old, who entered the hospital in serious condition. Medical staff reported he was fighting for his life after the period without vital signs before firefighters revived him.
Beach attendance increased this weekend due to hot weather conditions, leading to more emergency calls and services. The Civil Protection Department reported lifeguards performed 18 water rescues Sunday after swimmers were caught in rip currents despite preventive warnings.
Lifeguards noted some incidents occurred because people entered the water while intoxicated, significantly increasing the risk.
