Playa del Carmen, Mexico — Despite repeated urgent requests for reinforcements in sargassum cleanup efforts, El Recodo Beach in Playa del Carmen has reached a state of collapse. Located in the heart of the city’s tourist district, this area is among the hardest hit by the massive accumulation of the seaweed, which annually affects the Mexican Caribbean coast with environmental, economic, and public health consequences.

A Crisis with Far-Reaching Impacts

The excessive presence of sargassum not only damages the destination’s image among national and international visitors but also inflicts severe economic harm, particularly for nautical tourism service providers operating in the zone. Additionally, the decomposing seaweed releases gases such as hydrogen sulfide and hydrochloric acid, producing foul odors and potential respiratory issues for residents and tourists alike.

Inadequate Response Aggravates the Situation

Despite the escalating crisis, only four to six workers have been observed at the site in recent days, with machinery idle and no effective cleanup measures in place. The lack of personnel and operational equipment has not only failed to contain the problem but has also worsened daily accumulation, making sargassum removal increasingly difficult and costly.

Local communities and the tourism sector continue to await a decisive response from authorities to address this environmental emergency, which directly threatens both the economy and public health in the Mexican Caribbean.
