Chetumal, Quintana Roo — The State Coordination of Civil Protection confirmed on Friday morning that a mild intensity earthquake was felt in the southern zone of Quintana Roo, with no reports of damage to infrastructure or impacts on the population so far.
Epicenter Located North of Honduras
The state coordinator of Civil Protection, Guillermo Núñez Leal, reported that the seismic movement had its epicenter north of Honduras, which caused the phenomenon to be perceptible in Quintana Roo territory, primarily in the city of Chetumal and the coastal community of Xcalak.
According to the National Seismological Service (SSN), the earthquake occurred around 08:00 hours on Friday, January 16, with a magnitude of 5.6 on the Richter scale, located off the coast of Honduras, approximately 317 kilometers from the state capital, Chetumal.
No Damage Detected
Núñez Leal detailed that, following the report of the seismic movement, monitoring and communication protocols with municipal Civil Protection offices were immediately activated, along with preventive verification tours in the areas where the earthquake was most felt. No structural damage, interruptions in basic services, or risk situations for the population were detected.
An important fact is that this type of earthquake, whose epicenter is located in regions of the Caribbean or Central America, can occasionally be felt in the southern part of the state due to geographical proximity, although they generally occur with low intensity and without major consequences.
First Seismic Event of the Year in the Area
This is the first seismic event of the current year. In 2025, there were three: on February 8, November 22, and December 8, with no damage reported.
The State Coordination of Civil Protection issued a notice to citizens to remain calm and to inform themselves only through official channels, avoiding the dissemination of rumors or unverified information that could generate unnecessary alarm.
